The MAPS Model

Prior to aging out of foster care in Illinois, youth are expected to have mastered living skills required for adulthood. However, they’re often underprepared and overwhelmed when the time comes. The Traverse Adventure Therapy programs implement an original curriculum wherein youth develop12 skills through hands-on learning. As they are exposed to and demonstrate these skills, they earn the MAPS passport stamps, described below.

Mentality Stamp

 Mentality

We provide opportunities to reshape how youth see themselves, helping them to move forward towards improved self identity and sense of empowerment.

Through their shared experiences in Traverse, youth establish healthy relationships and grow a new community. We provide ongoing support to ensure consistency and stability with these travel-mates.

Youth engage in new experiences, both within their own community and in the wider world, to help them determine their strengths, interests, and realistic plans for their future.

Sustainability

Youth develop a plan to ensure they maintain progress toward their personal development and goals. They are also encouraged to empower others and to improve the child welfare system.
